Werder Bremen turn 2-0 deficit into 3-2 win over Augsburg

Werder recover from two-goal deficit

Werder Bremen defeated FC Augsburg 3-2 at the Weser-Stadion on Saturday, completing a comeback after trailing 0-1 at half-time. Augsburg led 2-0 early in the second half, but Bremen scored three times in the final 24 minutes to secure the win.

Augsburg took the lead in the 18th minute when Robin Fellhauer finished a move assisted by Fabian Rieder. The visitors doubled their advantage in the 58th minute through Calvin Marc Brackelmann, who was set up by Alexis Claude-Maurice. That second goal marked the turning point, as Bremen responded with sustained pressure rather than allowing the deficit to settle the contest.

Late goals complete the turnaround

Marco Grüll pulled one back in the 66th minute, converting after an assist from Iván San José Cantalejo. Niclas Füllkrug then brought Bremen level in the 86th minute. The winning goal arrived in the 90th minute, when Mitchell Weiser scored with Grüll providing the assist.

The match also featured several disciplinary moments. Han-Noah Massengo was booked in the fifth minute, while Arthur Augusto De Matos Soares received a yellow card in the 27th. Grüll was cautioned after scoring, and Augsburg coach M. Baum and Hennes Behrens were also booked in the closing stages. No red cards were recorded.

Bremen’s pressure outweighed the scoreline

The final score did not reflect Bremen’s statistical control. The hosts had 59% possession and completed 599 accurate passes compared with Augsburg’s 259. Bremen also held a 20-6 advantage in total shots, including 11-4 on target, while Augsburg goalkeeper made seven saves. Augsburg’s two goals came despite producing only four shots inside the box and six attempts overall.

Bremen’s dominance became especially clear during the comeback, although Augsburg had proved efficient enough to establish a two-goal lead. The hosts made attacking changes that included bringing on Mitchell Weiser in the 68th minute and Salim Amani Musah in the 78th, while Augsburg also used substitutions after half-time.

The result changes Bremen’s recent sequence of loss, win and draw into a run ending with victory.
