Portland Timbers defeated San Diego 3-1 at Providence Park, turning a level half-time score into a convincing home victory in Major League Soccer’s 20th regular-season round. San Diego controlled possession and produced more attempts, but Portland’s sharper finishing decided the match.

Portland Take Control After Half-Time

The teams exchanged goals before the interval. Kristoffer Velde opened the scoring in the 29th minute after C. Bassett’s assist, but Gabriel Pirani restored parity for San Diego in the 45th minute, receiving the final pass from L. Morgan.

Portland then took control of the scoreboard shortly after the restart. A. Lassiter put the hosts back in front in the 51st minute with J. Fory providing the assist, giving Portland a lead they would not surrender.

Second-Half Goals Decide the Match

The decisive moment came in the 68th minute when David Pereira Da Costa extended Portland’s advantage to 3-1. Velde turned creator for the second time, supplying the assist after previously scoring the opener.

Portland’s three goals came from four shots on target, while San Diego managed six on-target efforts without adding to Pirani’s equalizer. A. Lassiter was booked in the 17th minute, and the closing stages brought yellow cards for O. Verhoeven and an unnamed Portland player in the 90th minute.

San Diego Dominate Possession but Fall Short

Velde was the standout performer, earning an 8.5 rating after recording one goal, one assist and three key passes in 74 minutes. Kamal Miller also produced a strong defensive display with a 7.7 rating, while Da Costa’s goal earned him a 7.6 mark.
