Toronto’s Late Rally Secures 3-3 Draw With Charlotte
Toronto FC recovered from two separate deficits to draw 3-3 with Charlotte at BMO Field on Wednesday, August 19. Charlotte led 2-1 at half-time and went two goals clear after the interval, but Toronto’s late response secured a point despite playing with 10 men for the final stages.
Toronto Rescue a Point
Toronto responded quickly after Charlotte took the lead in the eighth minute. Rodolfo Aloko finished an attack assisted by A. Westwood, but Markus Cimermancic restored parity five minutes later from J. Sargent’s delivery.
Charlotte regained control of the scoreline in the 20th minute when I. Toklomati converted L. Abada’s assist. Toronto entered the interval behind, yet remained within reach before producing its decisive late response.
Charlotte Build a Two-Goal Lead
The match shifted further toward Charlotte in the 56th minute when W. Zimmerman was shown a red card for Toronto. Just two minutes later, Henry Kessler extended Charlotte’s advantage to 3-1 with another assist from Westwood.
Toronto refused to fade after going a player down. Dániel Sallói reduced the deficit in the 76th minute after Theo Corbeanu’s assist, and Niklas Dorsch completed the comeback in the 90th minute from D. Etienne’s delivery.
Statistics Reveal a Balanced Contest
Charlotte enjoyed more possession, controlling 54% of the ball and completing 516 passes at 91% accuracy compared with Toronto’s 428 passes at 88%. The visitors also registered more shots on target, leading that category 10-6, and forced seven saves from Toronto’s goalkeeper.
The broader numbers, however, showed a much more even contest than the possession figures suggested. Both teams attempted 16 shots, Toronto won six corners to Charlotte’s five, and Toronto’s expected-goals figure was higher at 1.90 against Charlotte’s 1.35, helping explain the six-goal draw.
Table Impact and Standout Performers
The result left Charlotte sixth in the Eastern Conference with 29 points from 20 matches, while Toronto remained 11th with 21 points. Toronto’s record now stands at four wins, nine draws and seven losses, while Charlotte has eight wins, five draws and seven losses.
Aloko was the highest-rated performer, earning 8.3 after scoring once in 69 minutes and supplying two key passes. Kessler also impressed with a goal and two tackles, while Dorsch led Toronto’s recovery with a 7.9 rating and the 90th-minute equalizer; Matheus Pereira was booked in the 85th minute.
