Atlanta strike twice before half-time
Atlanta United FC defeated Sporting Kansas City 2-1 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Sunday, August 23, securing all three points in Major League Soccer’s Regular Season - 21. The hosts led 2-0 at half-time after an efficient opening period, then held on after Sporting reduced the deficit in the second half.
Tomás Jacob opened the scoring in the 13th minute, finishing a move assisted by Miguel Almirón. Atlanta doubled its advantage in the 24th minute when Fafà Picault scored with E. Baez providing the assist. Sporting’s response came in the 70th minute, as S. Afrifa pulled one goal back. Sporting had more possession but limited target attempts

E. Karic was booked for Sporting in the 22nd minute, between Atlanta’s two goals. Atlanta later received yellow cards for L. Brennan in the 72nd minute and E. Baez in the 76th. Sporting made three changes, including the half-time introduction of J. Reynolds for J. Davis and the 62nd-minute entries of J. Reid and S. Afrifa. Atlanta replaced Picault and A. Gill in the 62nd minute before bringing on S. Gregersen for P. Diaz in the 73rd.
Three points improve Atlanta’s position

The victory takes Atlanta to 21 points, while Sporting remain on 15 points after their defeat. Atlanta’s recent sequence now ends with a win, while Sporting’s most recent result becomes a loss.
Almirón was the standout performer, receiving a 7.9 rating after playing all 90 minutes. He supplied the assist for Jacob’s opener, registered one shot on target and created four key passes. Jacob also completed the match with a goal, a shot on target and three tackles.
