Three goals and 21 shots send Vancouver clear at Real Salt Lake

Vancouver Whitecaps defeated Real Salt Lake 3-0 at America First Field on Sunday, September 20, securing a convincing Major League Soccer regular-season victory. The Whitecaps led 2-0 at half-time and added a third goal after the break to complete the win.

The visitors took the lead in the ninth minute. O. Larraz supplied the assist for B. White, who scored a normal goal to give Vancouver an early advantage. Real Salt Lake did not concede again immediately, but the hosts were unable to equalise before Thomas Müller doubled the lead in the 29th minute. Y. Diaby provided the assist for Müller’s goal, leaving Vancouver two goals ahead at the interval.

Diaby adds a third after the break

Real Salt Lake made two changes in the 59th minute, bringing on S. Junqua for K. Henry and D. Marczuk for S. Lobjanidze. Further substitutions followed, with T. Booth and E. Eneli entering for A. Hezarkhani and C. Guske in the 65th minute. Vancouver also changed its personnel, including R. Priso making way for M. Laborda and E. Sabbi being replaced by R. Gauld.

The changes did not alter the scoreline in the hosts’ favour. Diaby scored Vancouver’s third in the 64th minute, adding a goal to his earlier assist. His performance earned a 7.7 rating, with two shots on target, two key passes and one tackle in 87 minutes.

Whitecaps create more but Salt Lake remain competitive in possession

Vancouver had 52% possession and completed 461 passes, compared with Real Salt Lake’s 48% and 431 passes. The difference was clearer in the shooting figures: the Whitecaps attempted 21 shots, including six on target, while Salt Lake recorded 12 shots and three on target. Vancouver also led shots inside the box 12-7 and posted the higher expected-goals figure, 2.19 to 1.16.

The possession gap was narrow, so the scoreline was not produced by overwhelming control of the ball. However, Vancouver’s greater volume and accuracy in dangerous areas matched its three goals. Yohei Takaoka was the highest-rated player at 7.9 after making two saves, while Real Salt Lake’s Juan Sanabria earned a 7.5 rating with two key passes.

Cards increase after half-time as table gap grows

Vancouver collected five yellow cards, including bookings for T. Johnson, J. Badwal, T. Blackmon, Diaby and E. Ocampo. Real Salt Lake received two, for N. Caliskan and M. Guilavogui. The Whitecaps finished with 14 fouls to Salt Lake’s 12, while both teams were shown a card after the interval as the match became more disciplinary.

The result leaves Vancouver first in the Western Conference with 46 points from 24 matches, a 14-4-6 record and a plus-30 goal difference. Real Salt Lake remain 11th with 29 points from 24 games, having recorded eight wins, five draws and 11 losses with a minus-two goal difference. Vancouver’s recent form now includes four straight wins, while Salt Lake’s most recent sequence includes two defeats and a draw.
