Colorado Rapids
San Diego defeated Colorado Rapids 3-0 at Snapdragon Stadium on Sunday, August 23, securing a convincing Major League Soccer victory in Regular Season Round 21. San Diego led 2-0 at half-time and added a third goal after the interval to complete a dominant home performance.
San Diego takes control before half-time
The decisive opening period began with San Diego breaking the deadlock in the 27th minute. O. Valakari scored a normal goal to put the hosts ahead, giving them the platform to control the match. E. Achouri doubled the advantage eight minutes later, scoring in the 35th minute and leaving Colorado with a two-goal deficit at the break.
The two goals established San Diego as the more effective side during the first half. Colorado attempted to change the direction of the match with three substitutions at half-time, bringing D. Yapi on for D. Sealy, W. Frederick on for J. Atencio and Y. Maziz on for H. Ojediran. However, the changes did not produce a comeback.
Pirani completes the scoring
San Diego maintained its advantage after the restart and extended the lead in the 71st minute. Gabriel Pirani scored the third goal, with M. Ingvartsen providing the assist. Ingvartsen had entered the match four minutes earlier for O. Valakari, meaning the substitution immediately contributed to the final margin.
San Diego also made another attacking change when A. Pellegrino replaced E. Achouri in the 68th minute. Colorado used a further substitution in the 60th minute, with A. Harris replacing G. Minoungou, but the Rapids could not find a goal against a San Diego side that preserved its clean sheet.
Discipline and league impact
Colorado collected three yellow cards during the second half. R. Cannon was booked in the 58th minute, followed by K. Rosenberry in the 89th and A. Harris in the 90th. No San Diego player was listed as receiving a card.
The result lifts San Diego from 24 points after 20 matches to 27 points after 21, while Colorado remains on 28 points after 21 matches. San Diego had been 13th in the Western Conference and now moves within one point of the Rapids, who were ranked seventh before the match. The win also adds another victory to San Diego’s recent sequence, while Colorado’s latest loss follows a mixed run of results.
