Ronaldo Martinez’s 40th-minute goal gives Velez a 1-0 win

Velez Sarsfield defeated Estudiantes L.P. 1-0 in the Liga Profesional Argentina Clausura, securing all three points after leading at half-time by the same score. Ronaldo Martinez scored the only goal in the 40th minute, with Thiago Silvero providing the assist.

Martinez decides the first half

Both teams lined up in a 4-2-3-1, with Guillermo Barros Schelotto leading Velez and Alexander Medina in charge of Estudiantes. The decisive moment arrived five minutes before the interval, when Martinez finished a move created by Silvero to give the hosts a 1-0 advantage. It was Martinez’s only goal of the match, but he also recorded two shots on target during his 73 minutes on the field.

The opening half featured disciplinary action before the goal. Silvero was booked for Velez in the 25th minute, while Alexis Castro received a yellow card for Estudiantes eight minutes later. Tiago Tomas Palacios was also cautioned in first-half stoppage time, leaving Estudiantes with two players booked before the break.

Estudiantes have more possession but cannot equalise

Estudiantes controlled 55% of possession and completed 345 accurate passes from 463 attempts, compared with Velez’s 248 accurate passes from 372. However, the visitors were less productive in front of goal. Velez registered 11 total shots to Estudiantes’ six, including nine attempts from inside the box compared with five for Estudiantes. The hosts also had the stronger corner count, five to one.

Velez finished with three shots on target and Estudiantes had two, while both goalkeepers made two saves. The numbers therefore showed a contest in which Estudiantes saw more of the ball but Velez created the greater volume of shooting opportunities. Four Estudiantes offsides also interrupted their attacking efforts, compared with one for Velez.

Second-half changes fail to alter the result

Medina made two changes at half-time, introducing Gabriel Neves for Lucas Piovi and Joaquín Correa for Brian Aguirre. Further substitutions followed in the 65th minute, when Adolfo Gaich and Edwuin Cetre made way for Guido Carrillo and Joaquín Tobio Burgos. Velez responded with Juan Cruz Policella replaced by Manuel Lanzini at 65 minutes and Lucas Robertone replaced by Luca Feler in the 72nd.

Cetre, Piovi and Correa were all booked after the interval, while Velez’s Matías Pellegrini also received a yellow card. The match ended with seven yellow cards in total, five for Estudiantes and two for Velez, and neither side received a red card.

Three points for Velez

Martinez was the standout performer, earning an 8.2 rating after scoring the winner and registering two shots on target. The result lifted Velez from 13 points after seven Clausura matches to 16 after eight, while Estudiantes remained on seven points after their eighth game, having entered the round 12th in Group A.
