Paris Brunner’s two goals settle Monaco’s 2-0 win over Marseille

Brunner brace secures Monaco victory

Monaco defeated Marseille 2-0 at Stade Louis II on Sunday, with Paris Brunner scoring both goals as Luis Filipe’s side claimed the points in Ligue 1’s second regular-season round. Monaco led 1-0 at half-time and added a second goal early in the second half to complete a controlled win.

The opening goal arrived in the 13th minute. A. Golovin provided the assist for Brunner, who gave Monaco the lead with a normal finish. Marseille had more of the ball after falling behind, but the hosts protected their advantage through the remainder of the first half. Brunner struck again in the 54th minute, this time supplied by E. Dier, putting Monaco two goals ahead and creating the decisive turning point.

Marseille had possession but lacked a finish

The statistics showed Marseille controlling the ball without converting that territorial advantage into goals. Bruno Genesio’s team held 65% possession and completed 647 passes, compared with Monaco’s 35% and 354 passes. Marseille also attempted more shots overall, 13 to 11, but Monaco led 5-3 in shots on goal. The hosts’ expected-goals figure was also higher at 1.49, against 1.22 for Marseille.

Both teams recorded seven shots from inside the box, while Marseille had the edge in corners, 6-5. Monaco’s defensive work helped preserve the clean sheet, with the visitors making three goalkeeper saves and the hosts making two. Marseille’s four blocked shots also indicated that Monaco’s defence repeatedly got in the way of attempts, while the visitors’ passing volume did not translate into a goal.

Brunner leads the ratings

Brunner was the clear standout performer, earning a match rating of 9.2. He played 81 minutes, scored twice and registered three shots on target, directly deciding the contest. Vanderson was Monaco’s next-highest-rated player at 7.9 after 94 minutes, with one key pass and three tackles. Lamine Camara also made four tackles and supplied one key pass in a 7.7-rated display, while Dier contributed an assist and one key pass.

Marseille made three changes during the match, including two substitutions at half-time and another in the 59th minute, but could not respond to Brunner’s second goal. Monaco later replaced Golovin and M. Coulibaly in the 82nd minute. The hosts collected four yellow cards: D. Zakaria in the 42nd minute, Camara a minute later, Nazinho in the 89th and L. Hradecky in the 90th. Marseille received none.

Result changes the immediate form picture

Both sides arrived after wins, but Monaco extended its positive start with a second consecutive victory, while Marseille’s winning run ended. The supplied Ligue 1 table lists Monaco eighth and Marseille sixth, with each team on three points from one game and a 1-0-0 record. Monaco’s 2-0 result therefore gives the hosts the stronger outcome on the day, despite Marseille’s greater possession and passing totals.
