New England Revolution win 2-1 despite New York City FC’s 66% possession

New England Revolution defeated New York City FC 2-1 at Yankee Stadium in Major League Soccer’s Regular Season Round 24. The visitors led 1-0 at half-time and secured the winner in the 90th minute after New York City FC had levelled in the second half.

Carles Gil opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the 12th minute. New England then lost Alhassan Yusuf to a substitution seven minutes later, with Jackson Yueill entering, while Matt Polster was booked in the 31st minute. The Revolution went into the interval ahead despite New York City FC later controlling much of the match.

New York City FC respond, but Gazdag decides it late

Possession and chances favour the hosts

They also led 18-11 in total shots and attempted nine shots from outside the box, compared with two for the Revolution.

However, the teams were level on shots inside the box at nine each and shots on goal at six apiece. New England goalkeeper Matt Turner made six saves, while New York City FC’s goalkeeper made four. The Revolution were more efficient with their opportunities, scoring twice while New York City FC’s greater volume produced only one goal.

Luighi Hanri was the standout performer by match rating, earning 8.2 after 27 minutes on the field. His goal and two shots on target made an immediate impact, though Gazdag’s late finish gave New England the result.
