New England Revolution defeated New York City FC 2-1 at Yankee Stadium in Major League Soccer’s Regular Season Round 24. The visitors led 1-0 at half-time and secured the winner in the 90th minute after New York City FC had levelled in the second half.
Carles Gil opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the 12th minute. New England then lost Alhassan Yusuf to a substitution seven minutes later, with Jackson Yueill entering, while Matt Polster was booked in the 31st minute. The Revolution went into the interval ahead despite New York City FC later controlling much of the match.
New York City FC respond, but Gazdag decides it late
New York City FC made two changes in the 63rd minute, sending on Hannes Wolf for Aiden O’Neill and Luighi Hanri Sousa Santos for Agustin Ojeda. That decision quickly paid off. In the 71st minute, Luighi Hanri finished a normal goal from Nicolás Fernández Mercau’s assist to make it 1-1.
New England responded with two substitutions in the 72nd minute, as Ilay Feingold replaced Polster and Dániel Gazdag came on for Dor Turgeman. Gazdag made the decisive contribution, scoring in the 90th minute from Ilay Feingold’s assist. Jack Harrison was then replaced by Wilson Harris in the 80th minute. The Revolution finished with two yellow cards, compared with none for New York City FC, and there were no red cards.
Possession and chances favour the hosts
The scoreline did not reflect New York City FC’s statistical control. The hosts had 66% possession, completed 535 accurate passes from 611 total, and earned 12 corners to New England’s four. They also led 18-11 in total shots and attempted nine shots from outside the box, compared with two for the Revolution.
However, the teams were level on shots inside the box at nine each and shots on goal at six apiece. New England goalkeeper Matt Turner made six saves, while New York City FC’s goalkeeper made four.
