Janssen hat-trick lifts Portland Timbers to 5-4 win

Portland Timbers defeated Minnesota United FC 5-4 at Providence Park on Sunday, earning a nine-goal Major League Soccer victory in Regular Season - 23. Portland led 3-2 at half-time after a frantic opening period, then held on for three points despite Minnesota controlling much of the match.

Janssen sets the early pace

Vincent Janssen opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the 11th minute, and Portland doubled its advantage nine minutes later when Drake Callender scored an own goal. Janssen added his second in the 26th minute, converting a move assisted by David Da Costa.

Minnesota responded before the interval. Marcus Caldeira pulled one back in the 32nd minute with assistance from Joaquín Pereyra, before Anthony Markanich made it 3-2 five minutes later after Kelvin Yeboah provided the final pass. The visitors carried that momentum into the second half, with Caldeira scoring again in the 50th minute to level the match.

Portland regain control, Minnesota respond late

Janssen completed his hat-trick in the 55th minute, scoring from Ariel Lassiter’s assist to restore Portland’s lead. Kristoffer Velde then added a fifth for the Timbers in the 71st minute, finishing a move created by Antony. Minnesota continued to threaten, however, and Tomás Chancalay reduced the deficit to one in the 90th minute after Carlos Harvey’s assist. Portland preserved its advantage through the closing moments.

The result was more closely contested than the scoreline might suggest. Minnesota had 60% possession and registered 17 shots to Portland’s 11, including eight efforts on target compared with five for the hosts. Portland’s one-goal victory therefore came despite Minnesota producing more sustained attacking volume. The Timbers were more efficient with their opportunities, while both teams completed a similar number of passes: 465 accurate for Portland and 474 for Minnesota.

Discipline and table impact

The match featured four yellow cards and no dismissals. Michael Boxall was booked in the 24th minute, followed by Portland’s Finn Surman just before half-time. Jefferson Abel Díaz Beleño and Morris Duggan were cautioned in the second half, in the 74th and 90th minutes respectively.

Janssen was the standout performer, receiving a 9.7 rating after scoring three goals in 68 minutes, while also recording three shots on target and three key passes. Portland entered the round 12th in the Western Conference with 28 points from 22 matches; the win takes the Timbers to 31 points. Minnesota, previously 10th with 29 points, remains on that total after a defeat that ended its latest sequence of draws. Portland also stopped a run that had most recently ended in a loss.
