Instituto Cordoba win 2-1 despite Estudiantes’ possession advantage

Instituto Cordoba defeated Estudiantes de Rio Cuarto 2-1 in Liga Profesional Argentina’s Clausura - 9 at Estadio Presidente Peron in Avellaneda. The result lifted Instituto to fourth in Group A with 16 points from eight matches, while Estudiantes remained 13th in Group B on six points.

Instituto made the decisive moves after half-time

The first half ended without a goal, but Instituto opened the scoring four minutes after the interval. Giuliano Cerato struck in the 49th minute, giving the hosts the lead and later receiving a yellow card in the 57th minute.

Instituto doubled its advantage in the 73rd minute. Leonel Mosevich scored, with Gustavo Abregú providing the assist. Estudiantes responded almost immediately when Marcos Ledesma scored an own goal two minutes later, cutting the deficit to 2-1. However, Instituto preserved its advantage through the remaining stages of the match.

Estudiantes had more possession but not the result

The statistics showed Estudiantes controlling more of the ball, with 59% possession and 464 total passes compared with Instituto’s 41% and 313 passes. Estudiantes also completed more accurate passes, 390 to 241. That control did not translate into a winning attack: Instituto attempted 13 shots to Estudiantes’ 10 and recorded seven shots inside the box, one more than its opponent.

Both sides registered four shots on goal. Instituto also had five blocked attempts, compared with one for Estudiantes, while the goalkeepers made four saves for Instituto and two for Estudiantes. The figures underline a match in which Estudiantes moved the ball more but Instituto created the slightly greater overall shooting volume and converted its key opportunities.

Mosevich led Instituto’s performance

Mosevich was the standout player by match rating, earning an 8.2 after playing all 90 minutes. His goal was supported by one shot on target and two tackles. Cerato also completed the full match and finished with a goal, two shots on target and a rating of 7.2, while Abregú contributed the assist before receiving a yellow card in the 48th minute.

Discipline and substitutions shaped the closing stages

Tomás González and Alejandro Martín Cabrera were booked for Estudiantes in the first half. Instituto’s cautions also went to Matías Tissera and Cerato, while Rubén Darío Forestello was booked in the 72nd minute. No red cards were recorded. Estudiantes made an early change when Gonzalo González replaced Raúl Lozano in the 35th minute, and further substitutions followed late on both sides. The final score left Instituto with the points despite Estudiantes’ territorial and passing advantage.
