Houston Dynamo defeated Real Salt Lake 2-1 at Shell Energy Stadium, securing all three points in Thursday’s Major League Soccer Regular Season - 24 fixture. The result keeps Houston second in the Western Conference with 40 points from 23 matches, while Real Salt Lake remain 10th with 29 points from 22 games.
Houston take the lead after an even opening
The match was closely balanced in possession, with Houston holding 51% to Real Salt Lake’s 49%. The Dynamo created slightly more attacking volume, recording 12 total shots to Real Salt Lake’s nine, while also leading shots on target 6-4. Both teams had opportunities inside the penalty area, with Houston registering seven such attempts and Real Salt Lake six.
The first major disciplinary moments came before the break. Real Salt Lake’s Diego Luna was booked in the 30th minute, followed by Juan Arias three minutes later. Lukas Engel was replaced by Philip Quinton at half-time, with Quinton later receiving a yellow card in the 90th minute.
Guilherme Augusto makes the difference
Houston broke the deadlock in the 57th minute. Lawrence Ennali supplied the assist for Guilherme Augusto, who finished a normal goal to put the home side ahead. Guilherme was the standout performer by match rating, earning a 9.0 after playing 89 minutes. His contribution included two shots on target and five key passes, as well as the opening goal and an assist.
Real Salt Lake responded through their substitutes. Diego Luna made way for Saba Lobjanidze in the 70th minute, and Lobjanidze levelled six minutes later after receiving the assist from Lineker Rodrigues. The visitors’ equaliser came despite Houston’s higher shot count, making the late stages competitive.
Late winner settles the contest
Houston regained the advantage in the 87th minute when Mateusz Bogusz scored from Guilherme Augusto’s assist. Bogusz completed the match with a rating of 8.2 and four shots on target. Houston then managed the closing minutes, with Héctor Herrera replaced by Matthew Arana in the 80th minute after Herrera had been booked in the 54th.
The statistics showed a narrow Houston edge rather than one-sided control. The Dynamo completed 457 accurate passes from 515, compared with Real Salt Lake’s 428 from 477, and had four fewer fouls, 7-18. Real Salt Lake won more corners, 4-1, but also finished with four offsides. The visitors’ goalkeeper made four saves, compared with two for Houston’s goalkeeper, yet the Dynamo’s sharper finishing decided the scoreline. Colin Guske was also booked for Real Salt Lake in the 67th minute, while neither side received a red card.
