Gouiri Double Leads Marseille to Four-Goal Opening Win

Marseille opened their Ligue 1 campaign with a commanding 4-0 victory over Strasbourg at the CEPAC Vélodrome on Friday. A goalless first half gave way to a decisive second period, with Amine Gouiri scoring twice before late goals from Keyliane Abdallah and P. Hojbjerg completed the home side’s emphatic win.

Marseille Break Through After Goalless First Half

Marseille established control early through their 4-3-3 shape, but Strasbourg held firm during a scoreless opening 45 minutes. The breakthrough arrived almost immediately after the interval, when Angel Gomes supplied the assist for Gouiri to put the hosts ahead in the 46th minute.

The goal gave Marseille the platform to increase their pressure, while Strasbourg were forced to defend for longer periods. Gomes was one of the home side’s most influential players, finishing with a 7.7 rating, one assist and two key passes.

Strasbourg Reduced to Ten as Gouiri Doubles Lead

Strasbourg’s challenge became considerably harder in the 59th minute when S. El Mourabet was shown a red card. The dismissal left Hugo Oliveira’s side with ten players and reduced their ability to resist Marseille’s sustained attacks.

Gouiri doubled the advantage from the penalty spot in the 66th minute, securing his second goal of the match. S. Amo-Ameyaw and S. Mara were also booked for Strasbourg, while N. Aguerd received Marseille’s only yellow card as the disciplinary count reflected a difficult evening for the visitors.

Marseille’s Possession and Shot Advantage

The statistics underlined Marseille’s superiority in possession and territory. The hosts held 66% of the ball, completed 589 of 647 passes and produced 13 total shots, including seven on target, while Strasbourg managed 34% possession, 272 completed passes and five attempts.

Marseille also created the clearer opportunities, recording nine shots from inside the box compared with Strasbourg’s three. Their expected-goals figure of 1.79 was well above Strasbourg’s 0.20, although Strasbourg did win four corners to Marseille’s three; that small set-piece advantage did not produce a meaningful scoring threat.

Late Goals Seal Comprehensive Victory

Marseille continued to press for more after Gouiri’s penalty and were rewarded twice in the closing minutes. Keyliane Abdallah scored in the 89th minute only ten minutes after entering the match, before P. Hojbjerg added the fourth goal in the 90th minute.

Gouiri was the standout performer, earning an 8.0 rating after playing 93 minutes and registering two goals and three shots on target. Strasbourg’s goalkeeper made four saves compared with two for Marseille’s goalkeeper, further illustrating the difference in attacking pressure despite the visitors’ goalkeeper preventing an even greater margin.
