Dallas recover from early deficit

FC Dallas defeated Sporting Kansas City 4-3 at Toyota Stadium in Frisco on Sunday, September 6, moving to 37 points after 23 regular-season matches. The hosts trailed twice during an open first half but turned the game around before half-time and secured the victory with a decisive late spell. Sporting Kansas City remain on 15 points after their 23rd match of the campaign.

Sporting Kansas City made the faster start. Taylor Calheira opened the scoring in the fourth minute, and Stephen Afrifa doubled the visitors' advantage in the 19th. Dallas responded through Logan Farrington in the 27th minute, with Petar Musa providing the assist, before Musa levelled three minutes later after Bernard Kamungo's delivery.

The momentum shifted fully toward Dallas just before the interval. Kaick da Silva Ferreira put the home side ahead in the 45th minute, finishing a move created by Farrington. Dallas therefore went into the break leading 3-2 despite Sporting's strong opening.

Late drama settles an open contest

Sporting Kansas City continued to threaten after the restart and restored parity in the 78th minute, when Calheira scored his second goal of the match following Emir Karic's assist. Dallas then found the decisive moments late on. Musa converted a penalty in the 90th minute, while Santiago Moreno also scored in that minute after being set up by Samuel Sarver.

The substitutions added to the changes in the match. Shapi Suleymanov replaced André Luiz for Sporting in the 58th minute, while Dallas introduced Sebastien Ibeagha and Christian Cappis for Herman Johansson and Ramiro four minutes later. Sporting later replaced Afrifa with Seymour Garfield-Reid, and Dallas brought on Moreno and Ran Binyamin for Farrington and Joaquín Valiente Cioli.

Moises Castillo received Sporting's only yellow card in the 88th minute, with coach Raphael Wicky booked two minutes later. There were no red cards, and Dallas committed eight fouls to Sporting's 10.

Sporting create more but Dallas finish better

The statistics show why the scoreline was so close. Sporting had 56% possession, completed 412 accurate passes compared with Dallas's 303, and attempted 26 shots to the hosts' 15. The visitors also had more corner kicks, seven to three, and produced 15 shots inside the box against Dallas's 11. However, both teams registered 10 shots on goal, while Dallas converted its key opportunities more effectively.

Calheira was the standout performer by rating, earning 9.1 after scoring twice, recording three shots on target and creating four key passes. Musa was Dallas's leading contributor with a rating of 8.9, two goals and one assist. The result strengthens fifth-placed Dallas's position in the Western Conference, while Sporting remain 15th and continue to sit at the bottom of the listed conference standings.
