Everton 2-2 Manchester United: Late Maitland-Niles Goal Preserves Unbeaten Start

Everton drew 2-2 with Manchester United at Hill Dickinson Stadium after a late exchange of goals turned an open Premier League contest into a share of the points. United took the lead through Bryan Mbeumo, Everton equalised with Tyrique George, Benjamin Šeško restored the visitors’ advantage, and Ainsley Maitland-Niles struck in the 90th minute to level the match.

Four goals after the interval

The first half ended goalless, with Harrison Armstrong and Brennan Johnson booked for Everton before the break. Manchester United moved ahead one minute into the second half when Mbeumo finished a move assisted by Kobbie Mainoo. It was United’s clearest reward for their greater control of possession, but Everton continued to create the more dangerous volume of efforts around goal.

Everton’s response arrived in the 83rd minute. Hayden Hackney supplied Tyrique George, who scored to bring the home side level. United immediately regained the lead five minutes later, with Luke Shaw providing the assist for Šeško’s goal. The substitute had entered in the 70th minute for Matheus Cunha and needed only 20 minutes to make a decisive impact.

Everton refused to settle for defeat. Maitland-Niles, introduced in the 77th minute for James Garner, scored in the 90th minute to complete the comeback. The late goal preserved Everton’s unbeaten start to the regular season and denied United a second league win.

Everton created the greater threat

Manchester United had 55% possession and completed 455 accurate passes from 524 attempts, compared with Everton’s 45% possession and 362 accurate passes from 419. United also committed more fouls, 11 to seven, while both teams received three yellow cards and neither was shown a red card. Luke Shaw was booked in the 62nd minute, followed by Harry Maguire and Diogo Dalot in the closing stages.

However, Everton’s attacking numbers were stronger than the scoreline might suggest. The hosts registered 18 total shots to United’s 14, including 14 from inside the box compared with six for the visitors. Everton also had six shots on goal against United’s three, although United goalkeeper saves numbered four to Everton’s one. The statistics pointed to a match in which United controlled the ball but Everton more consistently tested the goal.

Table positions remain close

The draw moved Everton to 10th with four points from two matches, maintaining a record of one win and one draw. Their pre-match form was also a win followed by a draw. Manchester United remained 12th on three points, with one win and one loss, after entering the match with loss-and-win form. The result left both sides without defeat on the day but prevented United from overtaking Everton.

George was the standout performer, earning an 8.2 rating after playing all 90 minutes, scoring once, registering a shot on target and supplying three key passes. Mbeumo’s goal earned him a 7.9 rating, while Mainoo and Šeško were both rated 7.7.
