Estudiantes Rout Gimnasia 4-0 to Transform Clausura Derby

Estudiantes L.P. defeated Gimnasia L.P. 4-0 in the Liga Profesional Argentina Clausura on Saturday, taking control of the La Plata derby at Estadio Ciudad de La Plata. Eros Mancuso, Tomás Palacios, Joaquín Tobio Burgos and Alexis Castro scored as Estudiantes turned a narrow half-time advantage into a comprehensive victory.

Estudiantes Strike Late Before Half-Time

Estudiantes dominated possession from the opening stages, but the score remained level until the closing minutes of the first half. The hosts completed 76% of their passes and produced sustained pressure, while Gimnasia managed only 24% possession and two corners.

The breakthrough arrived in the 43rd minute when Eros Mancuso scored from an assist by Joaquín Tobio Burgos. The goal gave Estudiantes a 1-0 lead at the interval and rewarded their territorial control, although Gimnasia had remained within reach on the scoreboard before half-time.

Red Cards Leave Gimnasia Shorthanded

Gimnasia’s task had already become more difficult before Mancuso’s goal, with A. Steimbach shown a red card in the 35th minute. The dismissal reduced the visitors to ten players and allowed Estudiantes to apply even greater pressure through their 4-2-3-1 shape.

The disciplinary problems continued after the break. German Conti received yellow cards in the 50th and 53rd minutes, with the second booking resulting in another red card and leaving Gimnasia with nine players. I. Miramon, A. Max and M. Panaro were also cautioned for Gimnasia, while Tomás Palacios and G. Benedetti entered the referee’s book for Estudiantes.

Estudiantes Turn Control into Four Goals

Estudiantes converted their numerical advantage into three second-half goals. Tomás Palacios doubled the lead in the 60th minute after being set up by A. Gaich, before Burgos scored ten minutes later from J. Correa’s assist.

Alexis Castro completed the scoring in the 84th minute, finishing a move created by E. Meza. Estudiantes finished with 20 shots to Gimnasia’s eight, led 8-3 in efforts on target and recorded 12 shots from inside the box compared with six for the visitors. Their expected-goals figure was also superior at 2.33 to 0.54.

Castro Leads Comprehensive Derby Victory

Castro was the outstanding performer, earning a 9.9 rating after scoring once, placing two shots on target and producing three key passes. Burgos also had a decisive influence with one goal and one assist, while Mancuso contributed a goal and four tackles.

The result lifted Estudiantes from three points after four Clausura matches to six, improving their goal difference from -2 to +2. Gimnasia entered the match second in Group B with nine points and remained on that total after five rounds, but their goal difference fell from +3 to -1 and their record became three wins, one draw and one loss.
