Emersonn leads Ipswich to a 3-2 win at Crystal Palace

Ipswich edge five-goal contest

Ipswich defeated Crystal Palace 3-2 at Selhurst Park on Saturday, September 12, securing a second Premier League win of the season. Palace led early, but Ipswich turned the match around before half-time and held on after a late response from the hosts.

Goals change the momentum

Crystal Palace took the lead in the 14th minute when Anan Khalaili finished a move assisted by Daichi Kamada. Ipswich responded nine minutes later, with Emersonn scoring from a Leif Davis assist. Davis then became scorer himself in the 45th minute, creating the chance with an assist from Emersonn to give Ipswich a 2-1 half-time lead.

The visitors extended their advantage in the 90th minute through substitute Zian Flemming, who had replaced Emersonn in the 63rd minute. Palace pulled one goal back in the 75th minute as Jörgen Strand Larsen converted Kamada’s second assist, but Ipswich protected their lead through the closing stages.

Palace faced a major setback

The key disciplinary incident came in the 34th minute, when Crystal Palace defender Axel Disasi was shown a red card. Palace made an adjustment soon afterwards, sending Takehiro Tomiyasu on for Yeremy Pino in the 37th minute. Ipswich collected three yellow cards, shown to Jack Clarke, Abdul Fatawu Issahaku and Saša Lukić, while Chris Richards was booked for Palace in the 90th minute.

Ipswich made further changes in the second half, introducing Jaden Philogene-Bidace, Daizen Maeda, Zian Flemming and Florentino Luís. Palace also brought on Will Hughes for Adam Wharton in the 77th minute.

Ipswich had the statistical edge

The visitors had 54% possession and completed 365 accurate passes compared with Palace’s 313. Ipswich also led total shots 12-11 and shots on goal 6-4, indicators of a modest attacking advantage that matched the final score. Palace did register more shots inside the box, 9-8, and won six corners to Ipswich’s three, but the extra pressure did not produce an equaliser.

Result reshapes the early table

Before the match, Palace and Ipswich were 13th and 14th respectively, each with three points from three games and a record of one win and two defeats. The result gives Ipswich their second victory, while Palace suffer a third loss. It also ends Ipswich’s run of two successive defeats, whereas Palace’s pre-match sequence of two losses and a win is followed by another defeat.

Emersonn was the standout performer, receiving an 8.6 rating after scoring once, assisting once and recording a shot on target and a key pass in 63 minutes.
