Elche take three points despite Espanyol’s statistical control

Elche defeated Espanyol 3-1 at RCDE Stadium on Friday, September 18, moving to five points after seven La Liga matches. Espanyol remained on seven points and fell to ninth in the current table, while Elche stayed 17th. The result gave Elche a win after a run of draw, loss, loss, loss, draw, loss and win in their listed recent form, while Espanyol’s sequence now includes another defeat.

Niño strikes twice before half-time

The match changed early when Elche’s Federico Redondo Solari was sent off in the sixth minute. Despite playing with 10 men for most of the contest, Elche took control of the scoreline. Fernando Niño Rodríguez opened the scoring in the 26th minute, converting a move assisted by Roy Revivo, then doubled the advantage three minutes later with Revivo again providing the assist. Niño was booked in the 22nd minute and was replaced by Abiel Alessio Osorio after 61 minutes, having completed a decisive first hour.

Espanyol made two changes at half-time, with Quilindschy Hartman and Marcos Fernández entering for Roger Hinojo and Urko Gonzalez. Their pressure produced a route back into the match in the 72nd minute, but the goal came through an own goal by Víctor Chust. Elche restored its two-goal cushion six minutes later when Germán Valera scored from a Tete Morente assist. Valera completed the match with the winning side’s final goal, while late yellow cards went to Espanyol’s Clemens Riedel and Elche’s Lucas Cepeda.

Espanyol had more of the ball but not the result

The statistics show a clear contrast between territory and effectiveness. Espanyol held 66% possession, completed 449 accurate passes from 510, and recorded 23 shots. Elche had 34% possession, 193 accurate passes from 282 and nine attempts. Espanyol also registered 13 shots inside the box to Elche’s six, but only four of their efforts were on target. Elche put six shots on goal and converted three of them, while the visitors’ goalkeeper made four saves compared with three for Espanyol’s goalkeeper.

Espanyol’s 14 fouls and nine offsides also reflected an aggressive attempt to sustain attacks, but Elche’s defensive resistance held after the dismissal. The 3-1 scoreline therefore did not follow the main possession or total-shot figures; Elche were more clinical in the decisive moments.

Fer Niño leads Elche’s standout performers

Fernando Niño Rodríguez was the highest-rated player, receiving an 8.6 rating after scoring twice in 61 minutes and placing two shots on target. Germán Valera also made a direct impact with an 8.2 rating, one goal, one key pass and three tackles in 90 minutes. Revivo was rated 8.0 after supplying both assists, making his contribution central to Elche’s first-half advantage.
