Chelsea hold on after five-goal opening-night finish

Chelsea defeated Fulham 3-2 at Craven Cottage on Monday, securing the points after a fast-moving Premier League contest. The visitors led 2-1 at half-time, extended their advantage early in the second half and then survived Fulham’s response to claim the win.

Chelsea strike early, Fulham respond

Chelsea took the lead after only one minute when Joao Pedro converted a move assisted by C. Palmer. Fulham answered in the 23rd minute through J. King, who finished after T. Castagne supplied the assist. The home side’s equaliser briefly restored the balance, but Chelsea regained the lead four minutes before the interval. M. Rogers scored in the 41st minute, with M. Lacroix creating the goal, sending Chelsea into half-time ahead.

The decisive moment arrived shortly after the restart. C. Palmer made it 3-1 in the 49th minute, assisted by Joao Pedro, giving Chelsea a two-goal cushion. Fulham control possession but Chelsea carry the greater threat

The scoreline did not reflect Fulham’s control of the ball. Alvaro Arbeloa’s 4-2-3-1 recorded 61% possession, 600 total passes and 521 accurate passes, compared with Chelsea’s 39%, 384 passes and 315 accurate passes. Fulham also won six corners to Chelsea’s four and committed 12 fouls to the visitors’ seven.

Chelsea, operating in Xabi Alonso’s 3-4-2-1, were more productive in front of goal. They attempted 17 shots to Fulham’s 12, had six efforts on target against five, and posted the higher expected-goals figure at 1.67 compared with 1.28. Chelsea also recorded 12 shots inside the box, five more than Fulham, helping explain how they won despite seeing less of the ball.

Cards and changes shape the closing stages

Chelsea collected three yellow cards, with L. Colwill booked in the fifth minute, R. Lavia in the 12th and R. James in the 75th. Fulham received two, for C. Bassey in the 76th minute and T. Castagne in the 88th. Substitutions followed throughout the second half, including Chelsea replacing R. Lavia and J. Hato in the 65th minute and M. Gusto with P. Neto in the 76th. Fulham also made changes involving S. Charles, Kevin and R. Sessegnon.

Palmer leads Chelsea’s individual display

C. Palmer was the standout performer, earning a rating of 8.9 after 83 minutes. He scored once, assisted once and delivered three key passes. M. Rogers also impressed with a rating of 8.5, while Joao Pedro finished with a goal and an assist. The result gives Chelsea a winning start from the completed fixture, while Fulham begin with a defeat; before kick-off, they were listed 12th and Chelsea 11th, with both shown on zero points from zero games.
