Charlotte’s Fast Start Secures 3-1 Win Over Columbus

Charlotte defeated Columbus Crew 3-1 at Bank of America Stadium on Saturday, securing all three points in Major League Soccer’s Regular Season Round 19. Two goals inside the opening nine minutes gave Charlotte an early advantage, and P. Biel’s second-half strike settled a match in which Columbus had most of the ball but struggled to turn its attacking volume into goals.

Charlotte Strikes Twice Inside Nine Minutes

Charlotte made the ideal start when Brandt Bronico opened the scoring in the first minute. D. Schnegg supplied the assist, giving the home side an immediate platform and forcing Columbus to respond before it had settled into the contest.

The advantage doubled in the ninth minute as Liel Abada converted a penalty. Columbus reduced the deficit shortly before half-time through C. Adams in the 41st minute, but Charlotte still carried a 2-1 lead into the interval after a highly productive opening spell.

Columbus Controls Possession but Misses Chances

Columbus controlled the match territorially, holding 70% possession and completing 722 passes with 92% accuracy. The visitors also recorded 26 total shots, won 13 corners and produced 17 attempts from inside the box, clear signs of sustained attacking involvement.

That dominance did not translate efficiently onto the scoresheet. Eleven Columbus shots were off target and another 11 were blocked, while Charlotte managed seven shots on goal from only nine attempts overall; the hosts also posted the higher expected-goals figure, 1.91 to 1.42.

Biel Seals Victory After Second-Half Pressure

Charlotte’s compact approach allowed Columbus to circulate possession, but the home side remained more clinical in decisive areas. Goalkeeper saves were level at three apiece, yet Charlotte’s sharper finishing kept it in front despite completing only 313 passes and holding 30% of the ball.

The decisive moment arrived in the 73rd minute when P. Biel restored Charlotte’s two-goal cushion, with R. Aloko providing the assist. Charlotte also collected several bookings, with D. Schnegg, D. Smith, H. Kessler and A. Westwood all recorded in the match events, while Allan Saint-Maximin stood out with a 7.7 rating, one shot on target and two key passes in 45 minutes.

Charlotte Strengthens Fifth Place in Eastern Conference

The victory moved Charlotte to fifth in the Eastern Conference with 28 points from 19 matches. Dean Smith’s side now has eight wins, four draws and seven losses, with a goal difference of plus four, strengthening its position in the upper half of the table.

Columbus remained 11th on 20 points after its ninth defeat of the campaign. Laurent Courtois’s team has five wins, five draws and nine losses with a minus-four goal difference, and its 70% possession at Charlotte ultimately produced no points.
