New York Red Bulls

Chicago Fire
A point apiece after late Red Bulls equaliser
New York Red Bulls and Chicago Fire drew 1-1 at Sports Illustrated Stadium on Saturday, with Cameron Harper’s 85th-minute goal rescuing the hosts after Chicago had led for most of the match. The result was a draw in Major League Soccer’s Regular Season round 21, following a 0-1 half-time scoreline.
Chicago take the lead through Haile-Selassie
Chicago made the stronger start on the scoreboard when Maren Haile-Selassie opened the scoring in the 38th minute. The midfielder finished a move assisted by V. Radojevic, giving the visitors a lead they carried into the interval. Haile-Selassie was also Chicago’s most productive attacking player, registering two shots on target and four key passes during his 90 minutes.
The Fire used a 4-3-3 formation under coach Mario Barcena and maintained 52% possession, while completing 542 passes to New York’s 504. Their 52% share of the ball and eight shots from inside the box indicated a controlled attacking approach, although Chicago could not turn that territorial advantage into a second goal.
New York change the game after the break
New York made three substitutions at half-time, bringing on J. Ruvalcaba for M. Jimenez, M. Sofo for C. Cowell and J. Marshall-Rutty for M. Dos Santos. Further changes followed when O. Valencia replaced D. Nealis in the 56th minute and E. M. Choupo-Moting came on for E. Forsberg in the 57th.
Those adjustments helped the Red Bulls find an equaliser late in the contest. Choupo-Moting supplied the assist for Harper, who scored in the 85th minute. Harper had been introduced only nine minutes earlier and needed one shot on target to level the match. The goal capped a second-half response in which New York finished with more total shots, 11 to Chicago’s 10, and more shots on target, 6 to 5, despite having less possession.
Discipline and table impact
Chicago’s L. Barroso was booked in the 17th minute and J. Waterman received a yellow card in the 64th. New York’s only booking went to M. Sofo two minutes later. Both teams committed 10 fouls, while each was caught offside twice.
The point moves New York to 27 points from 22 matches and Chicago to 37 points from 21. Chicago remain listed third in the Eastern Conference and New York eighth in the supplied standings. The draw adds a point to each team’s latest form sequence: New York had won its previous match, while Chicago had lost theirs. Haile-Selassie was the standout performer, earning a 7.6 rating after scoring and creating four key passes.
