Brighton take control after the break

Brighton beat Coventry 5-0 at Coventry Building Society Arena on Sunday, with the victory moving them to four points from four Premier League matches. Coventry remain without a point after four games. The result extended Coventry’s run of defeats to four, while Brighton improved on their pre-match sequence of one win, one loss and one draw.

Brighton led 1-0 at half-time after Charalampos Kostoulas opened the scoring in the 35th minute. Pascal Groß supplied the assist, giving Brighton the advantage despite Coventry keeping the deficit to one goal through the opening period.

Second goal and red card changed the contest

Malick Yalcouyé doubled Brighton’s lead in the 51st minute, finishing from Maxim De Cuyper’s assist. Two minutes later, Coventry were reduced to 10 men when Taiwo Awoniyi received a red card. That dismissal was a major turning point, leaving Coventry with a larger numerical disadvantage as Brighton continued to press for more.

Groß added Brighton’s third from the penalty spot in the 70th minute. Lewis Dunk then made it 4-0 in the 83rd minute, with Chema Andrés providing the assist. Yasin Ayari completed the scoring in the 90th minute after another assist from Groß.

Brighton dominated possession and shots

The statistics showed a clear territorial advantage for the visitors. Brighton held 69% possession and completed 512 accurate passes from 570 total, compared with Coventry’s 175 accurate passes from 246. Brighton also recorded 22 shots to Coventry’s 14, including seven shots on goal against six.

Coventry still produced 12 shots inside the box and six shots on goal, so the scoreline was not explained by a complete lack of attacking attempts. However, Brighton created the greater volume overall and converted five times. Brighton goalkeeper B. Verbruggen made six saves, while Coventry’s goalkeeper made two.

Groß leads Brighton’s individual display

Groß was the standout performer, earning a match rating of 8.6. He played all 90 minutes, scored once, provided two assists and recorded six key passes. Yalcouyé also made a strong contribution before being replaced by Chema Andrés in the 65th minute, scoring once and registering two shots on target.

Result reshapes the early table picture

Coventry began the round 20th with zero points and a goal difference of minus five; the heavy defeat further damaged that record. Brighton started 12th on four points with a goal difference of three, and the five-goal win strengthened their early position while ending the matchday with three points added to their total.
