Azón’s Late Goal Gives Getafe Three Points Despite Malaga Possession

Getafe defeated Malaga 1-0 at the Coliseum Alfonso Pérez on Sunday, with Iván Azón scoring in the 85th minute to decide the La Liga regular-season meeting. The result moves Getafe to eight points after seven matches, while Malaga remain on three points and without a win.

Azón strikes late

The match stayed goalless until the closing stages. Azón broke the deadlock five minutes before the end of normal time, finishing a move assisted by Martin Satriano. It was Getafe’s only goal, but it settled a contest in which the home side created the greater volume of shooting opportunities.

Getafe finished with 19 total shots, including 11 from inside the box, compared with 11 shots and six inside the box for Malaga. The hosts also registered seven shots on goal to Malaga’s four. Malaga goalkeeper Alfonso Herrero kept the visitors in the match with six saves, while Getafe goalkeeper Z. Romero made four.

Malaga had more possession but less threat

Malaga controlled 55% of possession and completed 351 accurate passes from 414 attempts. Getafe had 45% possession, with 273 accurate passes from 326. That territorial advantage did not translate into the better attacking output: Getafe recorded more total shots, more shots on target and more efforts from inside the area.

The home side also won five corners to Malaga’s nine and committed 16 fouls, the same number as the visitors. The statistics therefore pointed to a game where Malaga circulated the ball more, but Getafe produced the sharper final-third numbers and ultimately found the decisive finish.

Cards and changes shape the second half

The referee, Javier Alberola Rojas, issued six yellow cards and no red cards. Johan Mojica was booked for Getafe in the 21st minute, while Malaga’s Eneko Jauregi and David Larrubia were cautioned before half-time. Nemanja Gudelj, Francho Serrano Gracia and Ramón Terrats later joined Getafe’s disciplinary list.

Malaga replaced Jauregi at half-time and made further changes involving Pablo Martínez Andrés, Carlos Ruiz Rubio, Ramón Enríquez and Juan Cruz. Getafe introduced Orel Mangala for Dakonam Ortega Djené in the 65th minute. The result extended contrasting runs: Getafe’s record became two wins, two draws and three defeats, while Malaga’s became three draws and four losses. Getafe were listed 17th and Malaga 20th in the standings.

Azón leads the ratings

Azón was the standout performer, earning an 8.2 rating after playing 89 minutes. His goal was supported by three shots on target and two key passes. Satriano also made a decisive contribution with the assist, while Herrero’s six saves earned him Malaga’s highest rating at 7.7.
