Arsenal take control after Sunderland penalty miss

Arsenal defeated Sunderland 2-0 at the Stadium of Light on Saturday, September 12, earning the win in Premier League Round 4. Bruno Guimarães opened the scoring in the 58th minute, two minutes after Enzo Le Fée missed a penalty for Sunderland. Bukayo Saka then converted a penalty in the 90th minute to complete Arsenal’s victory.

Penalty miss changes the match

The key turning point came shortly after half-time. Le Fée had the chance to put Sunderland ahead from the spot in the 56th minute but did not score. Arsenal responded almost immediately. Declan Rice supplied the assist for Guimarães, whose normal goal gave the visitors the lead.

Arsenal made two substitutions at the interval, with Jurriën Timber replacing Ben White and Guimarães coming on for Myles Lewis-Skelly. However, Arsenal recorded five shots on goal against Sunderland’s three, while the hosts also missed their penalty. Sunderland’s four corners and 18 fouls reflected an active effort to stay in the contest, but Arsenal’s greater accuracy proved decisive.

Late dismissal adds to Sunderland’s setback

Discipline became a major issue near the end. Reinildo Isnard Mandava was booked in the 28th minute and sent off in the 90th, leaving Sunderland with 10 players as Saka scored from the penalty spot. Dan Ballard, Granit Xhaka, Brian Brobbey and Nordi Mukiele also received Sunderland cards. Arsenal’s cautions went to Mikel Arteta Amatriain, Gabriel dos Santos Magalhães and Kai Havertz.

Guimarães leads Arsenal’s ratings

Guimarães was the standout performer, receiving an 8.1 rating despite playing 44 minutes. He scored Arsenal’s first goal and registered one shot on target. Rice also made a significant contribution with a 7.7 rating, an assist and three key passes.

Arsenal’s perfect three-win pre-match record now includes another victory, taking the team to 12 points from four matches. Sunderland, previously ranked 14th with four points from three games, remain on four points after their first defeat in the listed sequence of loss, win and draw.
