Haaland settles controlled first half

Manchester City established control through possession and passing, building a 78% share of the ball and completing 733 accurate passes compared with Coventry’s 137. Their pressure produced the decisive moment after 26 minutes, when Haaland converted from Semenyo’s assist. Haaland finished with three shots on target and a key pass, underlining his influence in an attack that created 15 attempts overall.

Coventry were unable to find an equaliser before the interval, but they remained capable of testing the home defence. City goalkeeper saves were recorded at three, while Coventry’s goalkeeper made two saves. The visitors also registered 12 total shots, only three fewer than City, meaning the narrow scoreline did not fully reflect the difference in possession or Coventry’s willingness to shoot.

City protect narrow advantage

The second half saw both coaches turn to their benches. Coventry made four changes, introducing Loum Tchaouna, Caleb Yirenkyi, Ellis Simms and Brandon Thomas-Asante. City brought on Phil Foden for Rayan Cherki in the 66th minute and Ayyoub Bouaddi for Enzo Fernández ten minutes later. Those changes did not alter the score, as City preserved their lead through the final whistle.

The statistics showed City’s territorial dominance: they completed 800 total passes to Coventry’s 214 and recorded 14 shots inside the box, compared with eight for the visitors. Coventry had the edge in corners, five to four, and took four shots from outside the box against City’s one. City also committed fewer fouls, seven to Coventry’s 17.

Discipline and league impact

Milan van Ewijk was booked in the 19th minute, before Haaland’s goal, while Ethan Pinnock received Coventry’s second yellow card in the 90th minute. City had one yellow card in total, and neither side received a red card.

Haaland was the standout performer, earning an 8.2 rating after playing all 90 minutes and scoring the winning goal. Rúben Dias and A. Khusanov also received 7.5 ratings, while Semenyo’s 7.7 reflected his assist and three key passes.

The victory leaves Manchester City top of the Premier League standings with six points from two games, a 2-0 record and a goal difference of four. Coventry remain 17th with no points from two matches and a goal difference of minus four. The result extended City’s winning start and left Coventry with consecutive league defeats.
