74% Possession, 2-1 Defeat: Atletico Tucuman Punish Racing Club

Atletico Tucuman secured a 2-1 win over Racing Club in Liga Profesional Argentina’s Clausura Round 8, recovering from sustained pressure to take all three points in Avellaneda. Atletico led 1-0 at half-time, Racing equalised in the second half, but a late goal settled the match.

Atletico make early advantage count

The first major incident came in the 14th minute when Atletico’s Leandro Díaz missed a penalty. Racing were unable to capitalise on that reprieve, however, as Lautaro Godoy opened the scoring ten minutes later. Godoy finished from Nicolás Laméndola’s assist to put the visitors ahead.

Racing coach J. Vojvoda made two changes in the 31st minute, introducing Matías Zaracho for Diego Ulises·Ortegoza and Gastón Lódico for Matko Miljevic. Tomás Conechny was then replaced by Duván Vergara at half-time as Racing’s 4-3-3 sought a response against J. Falcioni’s 4-1-4-1 setup.

Racing level, but late goal decides it

The home side eventually found an equaliser in the 71st minute. Leonel Pérez headed Racing’s comeback effort, with Marcos Rojo providing the assist. Pérez was the standout performer by match rating, earning an 8.1 after 90 minutes, with one goal, one shot on target, one key pass and two tackles.

Atletico responded decisively late in the match. Ramiro Ruiz Rodriguez replaced Leandro Díaz in the 81st minute and scored nine minutes later, converting Gabriel Compagnucci’s assist to restore the visitors’ lead. Compagnucci had entered for Iván Tesuri in the 86th minute. Racing also brought on Adrián Fernández for Lautaro Diaz in the 81st minute, but could not find another equaliser.

Statistics favour Racing, result favours Atletico

The scoreline did not reflect Racing’s control of possession or passing. The hosts had 74% of the ball, completed 590 passes to Atletico’s 126 and attempted 19 shots compared with 12. Racing also had more efforts inside the box, 13 to five, and nine shots off target. Atletico were more efficient in front of goal, registering six shots on target to Racing’s four, and their two goals proved enough.

Discipline remained relatively limited: Racing received yellow cards for Diego Ulises·Ortegoza and Matías Pérez, while Leonel Di Plácido was booked for Atletico. There were no red cards. Atletico entered the round eighth in Clausura Group B with 10 points from seven games, and the victory lifts their total to 13. Racing, previously 15th with five points from seven, remain on five after a fourth Clausura defeat.
