5-0 win puts RB Leipzig three points clear of Hamburger SV

RB Leipzig beat Hamburger SV 5-0 at the Red Bull Arena on Sunday, with the result settled by half-time at 2-0. The victory gives Leipzig a first home win of the season, while HSV have now lost both of their opening Bundesliga matches.

How it happened

Tidiam Gomis opened the scoring in the 17th minute, finishing an attack assisted by Ezechiel Banzuzi. Antonio Nusa doubled the advantage in the 28th minute, sending Leipzig into the interval two goals ahead. The second half produced three more goals in five minutes: Willi Orbán struck in the 72nd minute from Nusa’s assist, Christopher Nkunku added another two minutes later, also supplied by Nusa, and Rômulo José Cardoso da Cruz completed the scoring in the 77th minute.

Leipzig controlled 64% of possession and completed 623 passes, compared with Hamburger SV’s 36% and 350 total passes. The hosts also recorded 19 shots to HSV’s 10, including 12 attempts from inside the box against seven. Leipzig’s six shots on goal and four goalkeeper saves from M. Vandevoordt reflected pressure at both ends of the pitch.

Who decided it

Nusa was the standout performer, earning a match rating of 9.0 in 78 minutes. He scored once, supplied two assists, created two key passes and registered one shot on target, directly contributing to three of Leipzig’s five goals. Gomis also made a decisive contribution, posting a rating of 8.8 with one goal, one assist and two key passes in 74 minutes.

Leipzig move to 12th in the Bundesliga with three points from two matches, six points behind leaders SC Freiburg. Hamburger SV remain 17th with zero points and a goal difference of minus seven, while Leipzig are now three points clear of them.
