33 Goals and a Late Penalty Shape Bundesliga Round 4

FSV Mainz 05 won a seven-goal contest 4-3 at Borussia Mönchengladbach, with Shuto Machino’s 90th-minute penalty deciding the round’s most dramatic match. The result left Gladbach rooted to the bottom of the Bundesliga table after four defeats, while Mainz moved to seven points.

Late drama in Mönchengladbach

Florian Neuhaus put Gladbach ahead in the 11th minute, but Phillip Tietz equalised seven minutes later. Sheraldo Becker then gave Mainz the lead on the stroke of half-time. Kevin Diks restored parity for Gladbach in the 57th minute before Isac Lidberg and Eric Martel put Mainz 4-2 ahead. Danny da Costa reduced the deficit in the 89th minute, only for Machino to convert from the spot moments later.

Bayern München produced the round’s biggest win, defeating Union Berlin 7-0. Jamal Musiala opened the scoring, Harry Kane added a penalty before half-time and Michael Olise struck three times. Kane scored again in the 54th minute and Ismael Saibari also found the net. Olise’s hat-trick made him the leading scorer of the round, with Kane finishing on two goals.

Bayern close the gap as Dortmund stay perfect

Bayern’s emphatic victory lifted them to 10 points, two behind leaders Borussia Dortmund. Dortmund maintained their perfect record with a 1-0 win at VfB Stuttgart, Maximilian Beier scoring in the 70th minute. Bayern have the stronger goal difference among the two, at plus 12 compared with Dortmund’s plus seven, but Dortmund remain the only side with four wins from four.

SC Freiburg also sit on 10 points after drawing 2-2 at Eintracht Frankfurt. Younes Ebnoutalib and Derry Lionel Scherhant put Frankfurt ahead at different stages of the first half, but Jonathan Burkardt and Yuito Suzuki secured a share of the points. The draw keeps Freiburg level with Bayern, while Frankfurt took another point from a four-goal game.

Leverkusen and Paderborn make their mark

Bayer Leverkusen beat RB Leipzig 2-0 through goals from Patrik Schick and Miguel Gutiérrez. The result moved Leverkusen to seven points and kept them among the teams immediately behind the leading trio. FC Augsburg also have seven points despite losing 3-2 at Werder Bremen. Robin Fellhauer, Calvin Marc Brackelmann, Marco Grüll, Niclas Füllkrug and Mitchell Weiser supplied the goals in Bremen.

SC Paderborn 07 recorded a convincing 3-1 victory over 1899 Hoffenheim. Santiago Castaneda and Stefano Marino scored before half-time, Adam Daghim made it 3-0 shortly after the interval, and Steffen Tigges pulled one back in the 69th minute. Elsewhere, Hamburger SV beat 1. FC Köln 2-1, with Nicolás Capaldo and Yussuf Poulsen scoring before Ragnar Ache’s 90th-minute goal.

Points shared at Schalke

FC Schalke 04 and SV Elversberg played out the only goalless draw of the round. Across all nine matches, 33 goals were scored. At the bottom, Hamburg have three points, Union Berlin one and Borussia Mönchengladbach none. The early table therefore shows pressure at both ends: Dortmund lead, Bayern and Freiburg remain close, and Mainz, Augsburg and Leverkusen occupy the next group on seven points.
