30 Shots, One Goal: Independiente Beat Central Cordoba 1-0

Independiente secured a 1-0 victory over Central Cordoba de Santiago at Estadio Unico Madre de Ciudades on Sunday, with Leonardo Godoy scoring the only goal in the 57th minute. The result gave Independiente the points in the eighth round of the Liga Profesional Argentina Clausura.

Godoy decides a closely contested match

Central Cordoba lined up in a 4-2-3-1 under S. Domínguez, while Independiente used a 4-3-3 led by coach Jádson Viera. After a goalless first half, Independiente broke through when Godoy converted from Mateo Pérez Curci’s assist. Godoy finished with one shot on target and was substituted in the 86th minute for Ramiro Martino.

The goal proved decisive despite Central Cordoba producing the greater attacking volume. The hosts registered 30 total shots to Independiente’s 15, including 23 attempts from inside the box compared with 10 for the visitors. Central Cordoba also had 11 corners, while Independiente had three. However, both teams managed five shots on goal, and Independiente goalkeeper R. Rey made four saves, one more than the three recorded by Central Cordoba’s goalkeeper.

Hosts had more of the ball but could not find an equaliser

Central Cordoba held 54% possession and completed 309 accurate passes from 383 total, compared with Independiente’s 272 accurate passes from 346. The home side’s pressure was reflected in 15 shots off target and 10 blocked attempts, but that territorial and statistical advantage did not produce a goal. Independiente, with 46% possession, held on to its narrow lead after Godoy’s finish.

Central Cordoba made its first listed change in the 66th minute, replacing Ezequiel Naya with Leonardo Sequeira. Santiago Moyano and Diego Barrera then made way for Alan Daian Laprida and Horacio Tijanovich in the 74th minute. Independiente introduced Josias Palais and Rubén David Martínez for Maximiliano Meza and Matías Abaldo at 71 minutes, before the late change involving Godoy.

Result shapes the Clausura picture

The result leaves Independiente listed eighth in Clausura Group A with 10 points from seven games, a record of three wins, one draw and three losses. Central Cordoba remains 14th with seven points from seven matches, having recorded two wins, one draw and four defeats. It was Central Cordoba’s latest loss in a mixed recent sequence, while Independiente added a win after its most recent run began with three draws followed by two wins.

Godoy was the standout performer, earning an 8.1 rating after scoring the winner, recording a shot on target and completing three tackles. Facundo Zabala received Independiente’s only yellow card in the 90th minute; neither team received a red card.
