3-2 win lifts Gimnasia M. after Gimnasia L.P. comeback

Gimnasia M. defeated Gimnasia L.P. 3-2 at Estadio Juan Carmelo Zerillo on Saturday, recovering from a second-half comeback to secure all three points in Liga Profesional Argentina’s Clausura sixth round. The visitors led 2-0 at half-time before Gimnasia L.P. levelled, but A. Modica completed his decisive scoring contribution in the 76th minute.

Modica gives Gimnasia M. early control

Gimnasia M. established the advantage with two goals from Modica. The first arrived in the 17th minute, when T. O’Connor provided the assist, and Modica struck again in the 39th minute to give Ariel Broggi’s side a commanding interval lead. The visitors’ efficiency was notable because they had less of the ball overall, but they made their opportunities count.

Mariano Messera changed his team before the break, sending R. Giampaoli on for J. Cortazzo in the 43rd minute. Further adjustments at half-time brought M. Zalazar and L. Janson into the match, and both substitutions quickly influenced the score. A. Auzmendi pulled one goal back in the 46th minute, assisted by B. Barros Schelotto, before Zalazar equalised in the 62nd minute following a pass from L. Janson.

Visitors answer the comeback

The momentum appeared to have shifted toward Gimnasia L.P., but Gimnasia M. restored its lead in the 76th minute. Modica scored again, with E. Fernandez supplying the assist, completing the decisive sequence and securing a 3-2 victory for the visitors.

The statistics showed Gimnasia L.P. having more possession, 57% to 43%, as well as more passes, 243 to 188. However, that control did not translate into goal threat: Gimnasia M. led total shots 8-4 and shots on goal 4-0. The visitors also had the higher expected-goals figure, 0.65 to 0.14, while Gimnasia L.P. recorded three corners to one.

Table impact and standout performer

Both teams began the round on nine points from five matches. Gimnasia M., fourth in Clausura Group A with a plus-three goal difference, moved to 12 points and improved its goal difference to plus four after the win. Gimnasia L.P., sixth in Group B, remained on nine points, with its goal difference moving from minus one to minus two.

Modica was the standout performer, receiving an 8.7 rating. He registered three shots on target and scored the two early goals plus the 76th-minute winner listed in the match events. F. Antonini and N. Barboza were booked for Gimnasia M., as was Modica in the 90th minute, but the visitors held on to finish the match in front.
