2-2 Draw: Paris Saint-Germain Recover from Two-Goal Rennes Lead

Rennes drew 2-2 with Paris Saint-Germain at Roazhon Park on Sunday, August 23, after taking a two-goal lead into half-time and conceding twice in the second period. The result was a draw, despite Paris Saint-Germain controlling much of the match statistically.

Rennes make the stronger start

Rennes opened the scoring in the ninth minute through Sebastian Szymański. A. Thomasson provided the assist, giving the hosts an early advantage. Rennes then doubled their lead in the 38th minute, when Esteban Lepaul finished after being set up by P. Frankowski. Franck Haise’s side reached the interval 2-0 ahead from just two shots on target.

Torres completes the comeback

Paris Saint-Germain completed the recovery 11 minutes later. Torres scored again in the 82nd minute, once more assisted by F. Ruiz, to make it 2-2. Further substitutions had preceded the equaliser, including F. Ruiz for J. Neves and M. Akliouche for W. Zaire-Emery in the 60th minute, while L. Beraldo replaced Vitinha in the 69th.

The scoreline did not reflect Paris Saint-Germain’s overall share of play. The visitors had 70% possession, completed 543 of 597 passes and registered 16 total shots, compared with Rennes’ seven. Paris Saint-Germain also won 10 corners and produced eight blocked shots. Rennes, however, were more efficient in the first half and converted both of their goals before the comeback began. The visitors’ expected-goals figure was 1.58 against Rennes’ 0.74, but the teams finished level.

Discipline and standout performances

A. Thomasson was booked for Rennes in the 42nd minute, with M. Tamari receiving another yellow card in the 63rd. Luis Enrique was cautioned in the 64th minute, followed by Marquinhos in the 76th and A. Hakimi in the 84th. Tamari was replaced by L. Blas in the 72nd minute.

Brice Samba was the highest-rated player, earning 8.6 for Rennes after making three saves in 76 minutes.
