2-1 comeback: Manchester City turn possession into late victory over Bournemouth

Manchester City came from 1-0 down at half-time to beat Bournemouth 2-1 at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday. Bournemouth led through Marcus Tavernier, but late goals from Marc Guéhi and Joško Gvardiol completed the turnaround in the opening Premier League round.

Bournemouth take early lead

Manchester City controlled much of the opening period, yet Bournemouth made the decisive breakthrough in the 26th minute. Evanilson assisted Tavernier, who scored to give the visitors a 1-0 advantage. Evanilson was booked just before the interval, with Bournemouth taking that lead into half-time despite having less of the ball.

Cherki then supplied both of Manchester City’s goals. In the 84th minute, Guéhi converted Cherki’s assist to level the match, with the defender recording one shot on target and one key pass.

Six minutes later, Cherki again provided the final pass, this time for Gvardiol to score the winning goal. Bournemouth made three substitutions in the 75th minute, bringing on Daniel Jebbison, Ádám Tóth and Tyler Adams, but could not restore their advantage. Phil Foden was booked for City in the 78th minute, while Bournemouth’s Alex Scott Silva received a yellow card after the equaliser.

City’s control finally rewarded

Manchester City had six shots on target, four off target and three blocked, while Bournemouth managed four on target and one off target. The hosts also won eight corners to three and completed 563 accurate passes at an 89% rate. Bournemouth’s goalkeeper Đorđe Petrović made four saves, while City goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma made three.

Donnarumma was the standout performer by match rating, earning 8.0 after playing all 90 minutes and making three saves. Guéhi was rated 8.2, the highest mark in the match, following his equaliser, one shot on target, one key pass and three tackles.
