17 shots and three goals send Instituto top of the Clausura

Instituto Cordoba defeated Talleres Cordoba 3-1 at Estadio Presidente Peron on Sunday, moving to the top of the Liga Profesional Argentina Clausura standings after Round 10. Giuliano Cerato and Fernando Alarcon scored for Instituto, while Talleres also conceded an own goal through E. Unsain.

Instituto take control after the interval

The first half ended without a goal, but Talleres were reduced to 10 players when A. Alvarez received a red card in the 45th minute. Fernando Alarcon was also booked before the break, adding to the disciplinary focus at the end of the opening period.

Instituto used the advantage after half-time. Cerato opened the scoring in the 50th minute, converting after an assist from G. Abregu. Eight minutes later, Alarcon doubled the lead when he finished a move supplied by Alex Luna. The two-goal margin gave Instituto a clear platform, although Talleres responded in the 66th minute through A. Maidana, who was assisted by M. Catalan.

The visitors' attempt to reduce the deficit did not produce an equaliser. Instead, Instituto restored its two-goal advantage in the 80th minute when E. Unsain scored an own goal. Talleres made several substitutions, including changes at half-time and three in the 65th minute, but Instituto held on for the final result.

Shot volume outweighed Talleres possession

The statistics show Instituto creating the more dangerous opportunities despite having less of the ball. Talleres recorded 55% possession and completed 407 passes at a 78% accuracy rate, compared with Instituto's 45% possession, 317 passes and 70% accuracy.

Instituto nevertheless led 17-4 in total shots, 6-1 in efforts on target and 12-3 in shots inside the box. Talleres had no blocked shots, while Instituto had five. The expected-goals figures also favoured the winners, at 0.99 to 0.34. Those numbers indicate that Talleres controlled more of the passing but produced far less threat in front of goal.

Result strengthens Instituto's lead

Instituto entered the match with 19 points from nine Clausura games and now has 22 points from 10. The win adds another victory to its most recent form and keeps its position at the top of the listed Clausura Group A standings. Talleres remained on eight points, now from 10 matches, and added another loss to a record that already contained five defeats.

Alex Luna was the highest-rated player, earning 7.7 after 65 minutes. He supplied the assist for Alarcon, created three key passes and made one tackle. Cerato also made a decisive contribution, scoring once and placing two shots on target in 89 minutes.
