16 Shots and Five Goals: Mainz Overwhelm Hamburger SV

FSV Mainz 05 defeated Hamburger SV 5-0 at Volksparkstadion on Sunday, with a commanding performance that produced a 2-0 half-time lead and lifted Mainz to 12th in the Bundesliga standings. Hamburger SV remain 17th after the heavy defeat.

Mainz take control before the break

The visitors opened the scoring in the 19th minute when Sheraldo Becker finished a move assisted by Kaishu Sano. Mainz continued to create the clearer opportunities, and Phillipp Mwene doubled the advantage four minutes before half-time after receiving the final pass from Becker.

Hamburger SV made three changes at the interval, bringing on Fábio Vieira, Patson Daka and Shafiq Nandja for Bilal Nadir, Martin Adeline and Jordan Torunarigha. The changes did not alter the direction of the match, however. Phillip Tietz scored Mainz’s third in the 48th minute, with Becker again providing the assist, leaving the hosts with a difficult task immediately after the restart.

Tietz completes a two-goal performance

Mainz remained efficient in front of goal as the match progressed. Tietz added his second in the 83rd minute, set up by Lee Jae-Sung, before Ransford Konigsdorffer completed the scoring in the 90th minute. He converted after an assist from Mwene, who had earlier scored and later received a yellow card.

There were three bookings in total. Mainz’s Anthony Caci was cautioned in the 31st minute, while Hamburger SV’s Zakaria El Ouahdi was booked five minutes later. Mwene’s late yellow completed the disciplinary record, with neither side receiving a red card.

Possession did not reflect the result

Hamburger SV had more of the ball, holding 54% possession and completing 345 accurate passes compared with Mainz’s 269. That control did not translate into attacking output: Mainz registered 16 shots to the hosts’ eight, had 12 attempts from inside the box to three, and put eight efforts on goal compared with Hamburger SV’s one. The visitors also forced three goalkeeper saves, while Mainz’s goalkeeper made one.

Tietz was the standout performer, earning a 9.5 rating after playing 90 minutes and scoring twice. Becker was also influential with a 9.2 rating, one goal, two assists and three shots on target. Mainz entered the match after a draw, while Hamburger SV came off a loss; the result now leaves the hosts on zero points with a -2 goal difference, while Mainz have one point and a goal difference of 0 in the listed table.
