Aston Villa’s 74% possession produces only a point at Hull

Hull City and Aston Villa finished 0-0 at MKM Stadium, with the points shared in the Premier League’s third round. The result ended Hull’s perfect start after two wins, while Aston Villa secured their first point after opening the campaign with consecutive defeats. No player found the net, despite both teams creating opportunities.

Villa controlled the ball but lacked a finish

Aston Villa dictated the match for long periods, recording 74% possession and completing 613 accurate passes from 682 attempts. Hull managed 166 accurate passes and 228 in total, but the home side remained dangerous when it attacked directly. Villa registered 13 shots to Hull’s 11 and had the stronger inside-the-box numbers, 10 to four.

The statistics nevertheless exposed a clear contradiction between control and result. Villa’s territorial dominance did not translate into goals or sustained accuracy in front of goal: only one of their attempts was on target. Hull, by contrast, put four shots on goal, while goalkeeper Z. Suzuki made four saves to keep Villa in the contest. Aston Villa also had five shots blocked, and both sides finished with seven efforts off target.

Few decisive moments in a goalless game

With no goals, there were no scorers or goal-producing turning points to separate the teams. The closest statistical indication of pressure came through Villa’s four corners and 10 free kicks, compared with Hull’s three corners and four free kicks. Both teams were caught offside twice, while Hull committed 10 fouls to Villa’s five.

Hull’s discipline became a notable feature after Semi Ajayi was booked in the 39th minute. Lucas Gourna-Douath received the second home yellow card in the 67th minute. Aston Villa avoided a booking, and there were no red cards.

Changes fail to break the deadlock

Hull made three changes, introducing Sorba Thomas, Brooke Norton-Cuffy and Lucas Herrington for Elliot Stroud, Lewie Coyle and Nobel Mendy between the 63rd and 71st minutes. Villa responded with a triple substitution in the 75th minute, sending on Alysson Edward Franco da Rocha, Alejandro Garnacho and Matteo Ruggeri for George Hemmings, Emiliano Buendía and Ian Maatsen. None of the changes produced a goal before full time.

Suzuki stands out for Villa

Aston Villa goalkeeper Z. Suzuki was the highest-rated player, receiving 7.7 after 90 minutes and making four saves. V. Lindelöf also completed the match with a strong 7.6 rating and two key passes. The draw leaves Hull’s early winning momentum interrupted and gives Villa a first league point, though their starting positions of third and 19th respectively underline the different form lines the teams brought into the match.
