How the match unfolded, with the data behind it

Houston Dynamo

San Jose Earthquakes
A scoreless draw in Houston
Houston Dynamo and San Jose Earthquakes finished 0-0 at Shell Energy Stadium in Major League Soccer’s Regular Season Round 22. The draw extended a tightly contested evening in Houston, with neither side able to turn its attacking opportunities into a goal.
San Jose carried more of the ball and created the clearer efforts. The Earthquakes had 57% possession, completed 507 passes at an 89% accuracy rate and registered 10 total shots, compared with Houston’s 43% possession, 374 passes and eight attempts. San Jose also led shots on target 4-0, but Houston goalkeeper Jonathan Bond kept the visitors out with four saves. The hosts’ five shots off target and three blocked efforts produced no attempt on target.
Bond keeps San Jose at bay
Bond was the standout performer, receiving an 8.3 rating after making four saves across 97 minutes. His contribution was especially important because San Jose’s expected-goals figure was 1.12, compared with Houston’s 0.65. The statistics suggested an advantage for the visitors in possession and chance quality, yet the scoreline remained level.
San Jose’s five shots inside the box and five from outside it reflected a varied attack, while Houston recorded four attempts from each area. The Earthquakes also had five blocked shots, and Houston earned more corners, 6-4, without finding a breakthrough. Neither side scored, so there were no goal scorers or scoring moves to decide the result.
Substitutions shape the closing stages
The match’s main changes came after the interval. San Jose’s R. Roberts was booked in the 58th minute, the only yellow card of the match. Houston then replaced F. Negri with I. Aliyu in the 61st minute, while San Jose made a defensive change when D. Romney gave way to M. Floriani in the 69th. P. Marie, B. Leroux and J. Ricketts were later replaced by P. Judd, N. Fernandez and J. Jasinski in changes made between the 73rd and 82nd minutes. Houston also introduced D. McGuire for H. Herrera in the 75th minute.
Both teams take a point
Houston entered the match second in the Western Conference with 38 points from 21 games, while San Jose was fourth with 33 points. The draw gave each team one additional point, leaving Houston ahead of San Jose in the conference positions. It also marked a shared result after contrasting recent sequences: Houston’s listed form included four straight wins before a loss, while San Jose had lost its previous four matches.
The 0-0 finish therefore reflected San Jose’s inability to convert its territorial and shooting advantage, while Houston’s defensive resistance, led by Bond, secured a point in a match where the visitors had the stronger statistical profile.
