Paderborn make their chances count in 3-1 victory

SC Paderborn 07 defeated 1899 Hoffenheim 3-1 at the Home Deluxe Arena on Sunday, securing their first win of the Bundesliga regular season. Paderborn led 2-0 at half-time before Hoffenheim pulled one back early in the second period, but a third goal restored the hosts’ advantage and settled the match.

Paderborn build decisive half-time lead

The opening goal arrived in the 29th minute, when Santiago Castaneda put Paderborn ahead with a normal goal. Stefano Marino doubled the lead three minutes before the interval, finishing after an assist from Laurin Curda. The hosts therefore took a two-goal advantage into the break despite Hoffenheim having the greater share of possession.

Hoffenheim responded five minutes into the second half. Adam Daghim scored after Max Moerstedt supplied the assist, reducing the deficit to one. Paderborn then made a key change at half-time, sending on Steffen Tigges for Marvin Pieringer. Tigges made an immediate impact after the interval, scoring in the 69th minute from Jonah Sticker’s assist to make it 3-1.

Hoffenheim had more of the ball but less threat on target

The statistics show a clear difference between control and effectiveness. Hoffenheim held 66% possession and completed 541 accurate passes from 635 attempts, compared with Paderborn’s 229 accurate passes from 321. The visitors also registered 22 shots to Paderborn’s 13 and had 15 attempts from inside the box, against seven for the hosts.

However, Paderborn produced five shots on goal while Hoffenheim managed only two. Hoffenheim also recorded 12 blocked shots and eight shots off target, suggesting that their numerical advantage in attempts did not translate into the same level of accuracy. Paderborn’s six corners and 14 free kicks helped them make their more direct attacking moments count.

Castaneda leads Paderborn performance

S. Castañeda was the standout performer according to the match ratings, earning 8.1 after playing all 90 minutes. He scored the opener, registered one shot on target and made four tackles. Marino also impressed with a 7.7 rating, while Tigges received 7.6 after scoring in 44 minutes on the pitch.

The only booking went to Hoffenheim’s Wouter Burger in the 45th minute. There were no red cards. Hoffenheim made three further substitutions after the break, while Paderborn introduced Sticker and Tom Baack as they protected their lead.

This victory takes them to four points and ends a run of two defeats and a draw in their most recent three matches. Hoffenheim began 13th on three points after one win and two losses; the defeat leaves them on three points and extends their recent sequence to two losses after a win.
