Rony and Gabriel Barbosa lift Santos to a 2-1 win over Remo

Santos defeated Remo 2-1 at Mangueirao in Belem on Saturday, earning three points in Round 28 of the Brazilian Serie A. The match remained scoreless until the final 12 minutes, when Santos struck twice to overcome Remo’s late response and secure the win.

Late goals decide an even contest

Santos broke the deadlock in the 78th minute. Rony finished a move assisted by Gabriel Barbosa, giving the visitors the lead after a match in which neither side had created a clear statistical advantage. Remo responded five minutes later through Marllon, who converted with assistance from Glaybson Yago Souza Lisboa.

The equaliser did not last. In the 87th minute, Gabriel Barbosa restored Santos’ advantage after Lucas Veríssimo provided the assist. The late sequence turned a balanced game into a Santos victory, with the visitors protecting their lead through the closing minutes.

Remo produced more shots but Santos were more efficient

The statistics indicate a close contest in possession and distribution. Santos held 51% of the ball and completed 502 passes, compared with Remo’s 49% possession and 452 accurate passes. Santos also attempted 567 passes overall to Remo’s 526.

However, Remo registered more total shots, 14 to 11, including seven efforts from inside the box and seven from outside. Santos had five inside-box attempts and six from distance. Both teams recorded four shots on goal, while Santos made three goalkeeper saves to Remo’s two. The figures therefore point to a more even match than the scoreline suggests, with Santos making greater use of its chances late on.

Discipline shaped the closing stages

Santos collected four yellow cards, given to Gonzalo Escobar, Gabriel Barbosa, Luan Peres and Gabriel Bontempo. Remo’s José Welison and Gabriel Poveda were booked, while Poveda was also shown a red card in the 90th minute. The dismissal left Remo to finish the match with 10 players. Remo committed nine fouls to Santos’ 14 and won 13 free kicks, compared with nine for the visitors.

Santos strengthen position as Remo remain 19th

Remo began the round 19th with 23 points from 27 matches, while Santos were 10th on 35 points from 26 games. The defeat leaves Remo on 23 points after 28 matches and extends a difficult recent run that had already included losses in their previous and third-most-recent listed matches. Santos’ victory takes them to 38 points after 27 games and reverses a recent sequence that began with a loss.

Rony and Gabriel Barbosa shared the highest rating at 8.2. Rony stood out for his winning contribution, scoring once in 90 minutes and adding two key passes. Barbosa also scored and supplied the assist for Rony, while Veríssimo earned a 7.7 rating after setting up Santos’ decisive goal.
