Austin hold on for 2-1 win at BC Place

Austin defeated Vancouver Whitecaps 2-1 at BC Place on Sunday, with Christian Ramirez scoring twice to secure the visitors’ victory in Major League Soccer’s Regular Season - 25. Austin led 1-0 at half-time after Ramirez opened the scoring in the 28th minute.

Ramirez strikes twice

Austin took the lead when Facundo Daniel Torres Perez assisted Ramirez for a normal goal. Vancouver had a chance to respond before the break, but Ryan Gauld missed a penalty in the 40th minute. That opportunity proved important as Austin carried its advantage into half-time.

Vancouver levelled four minutes after the interval. Gauld supplied the assist for Brian White, who scored to make it 1-1. Austin restored its lead in the 60th minute, when Joseph Rosales set up Ramirez for his second goal. The forward finished with an 8.6 match rating, two goals and two shots on target, making him the standout performer.

Vancouver controlled the numbers

The scoreline did not reflect Vancouver’s greater share of the play. The Whitecaps had 59% possession, completed 472 accurate passes to Austin’s 291 and attempted 20 shots. Austin managed only four shots, with three coming from inside the box. Vancouver also recorded 19 shots inside the box, six shots on goal and 12 off target, while Austin had two shots on goal and one off target.

Austin goalkeeper B. Stuver made five saves, helping his side protect the lead. Vancouver also won six corners without earning another goal, while Austin had none. The Whitecaps’ pressure produced more territory and attempts, but Austin’s two goals decided the contest.

Late dismissal adds to Austin’s discipline issues

Austin collected yellow cards for Jon Bell, Joseph Rosales, Guilherme Biro and Besard Sabovic in the match events, while Biro was sent off in the 90th minute after his earlier booking. Vancouver’s cautions went to Oliver Love Larraz, Jesper Ingemann Sørensen and Emmanuel Sabbi. Both coaches made changes around the second half, including Vancouver bringing on Emmanuel Sabbi and Austin introducing Brandon Vazquez.

Table positions unchanged at the top and bottom

Vancouver remain first in the Western Conference with 46 points from 24 games, despite the defeat. Their record stands at 14 wins, four draws and six losses, with a goal difference of 30. Austin move to 29 points from 25 matches and remain 13th, with seven wins, eight draws and 10 losses and a goal difference of -12. The result gives Austin the points even though Vancouver produced the stronger statistical performance.
