Argentinos JRS’ 64% possession earns 1-1 draw with Gimnasia L.P.

Auzmendi gives Gimnasia the lead

Argentinos JRS drew 1-1 with Gimnasia L.P. at Estadio Diego Armando Maradona in Liga Profesional Argentina’s Clausura - 9 round. The result was a draw after Gimnasia led 1-0 at half-time and Argentinos completed the comeback in the second half.

Gimnasia opened the scoring in the 26th minute. Agustin Auzmendi finished a move assisted by Ignacio Fernández, giving the visitors the advantage despite Argentinos later controlling much of the match. Auzmendi was Gimnasia’s highest-rated player, receiving a 7.8 rating after 84 minutes. He also recorded one shot on target and one key pass.

Red card changes the contest

Argentinos were reduced to 10 players shortly before the interval when Sebastián Prieto was shown a red card in the 41st minute. Nicolas Oroz then received a yellow card immediately after the restart. Gimnasia also collected four yellow cards: Bautista Barros Schelotto in the 35th minute, Fernández in the 79th, Ignacio Miramon in the 84th and Alexis Steimbach in the 90th.

Argentinos made two changes at half-time, bringing César Gabriel Florentín on for Emiliano Sebastian Viveros Mereles and Claudio Bravo on for Kevin Coronel. Gimnasia introduced Steimbach for Lucas Janson in the 57th minute, while Franco Ramón Torres replaced Maximiliano Zalazar in the 64th. Further substitutions followed late in the match.

Argentinos recover despite numerical disadvantage

Gastón Verón equalised in the 74th minute, with Tomas Molina providing the assist. The goal completed Argentinos’ recovery after falling behind and playing with 10 men for much of the game. Verón finished with a 7.4 rating, one shot on target and one tackle.

The statistics show Argentinos had the greater share of the play. They held 64% possession, completed 461 accurate passes from 550 total and registered 13 shots to Gimnasia’s eight. They also led 7-4 in shots inside the box, 6-0 in blocked shots and 6-3 in corners. However, both sides managed two shots on goal, and the score remained level after Verón’s equaliser. Gimnasia had more shots off target, six to five, and committed 15 fouls compared with Argentinos’ six.

Points shared in Group B

Argentinos entered the round top of Clausura Group B with 17 points from eight matches, while Gimnasia were fourth on 15 points. The draw takes Argentinos to 18 points after nine games and Gimnasia to 16. The result adds a draw to Argentinos’ recent form and ends the match with Gimnasia also taking one point from a game in which they led at half-time.
