1-1 Draw as Füllkrug Cancels Out Maina’s Köln Opener

1-1 draw leaves Köln and Bremen level on three points

1. FC Köln and Werder Bremen shared the points in a 1-1 draw at the RheinEnergieStadion. Köln led 1-0 at half-time after Linton Maina’s 11th-minute goal, but Niclas Füllkrug equalised in the 69th minute. The result came in Bundesliga regular-season Round 3.

Köln recover quickly after missed penalty

Köln received an early chance to take the lead when Thijs Dallinga missed a penalty in the eighth minute. The hosts responded three minutes later. Ellyes Skhiri provided the assist for Maina, who scored the opening goal for René Wagner’s 4-5-1 formation.

That advantage lasted through the interval. Maina played 65 minutes before Ísak Bergmann Jóhannesson replaced him, while Dallinga was withdrawn for Ragnar Ache in the 64th minute. Alessio Castro-Montes also made way for Sebastian Soraas Sebulonsen one minute later.

Füllkrug restores balance for Bremen

Bremen levelled in the 69th minute through Füllkrug, whose normal goal changed the scoreline after Köln had protected its first-half lead. He finished with two shots on target, two key passes and three tackles. Dariusz Stalmach replaced Ludovit Reis for Bremen in the 70th minute, and Füllkrug was later substituted for Mick Schmetgens in the 81st.

Köln made another change when Mikey Moore was replaced by Said El Mala in the 74th minute. Neither side found a second goal, leaving the match tied after both teams had scored once.

Bremen had the ball, but Köln created the sharper target count

Bremen held 53% possession and completed 461 accurate passes from 529 total. Köln recorded 393 accurate passes from 465. Despite that possession advantage, Köln had six shots on goal to Bremen’s five and eight corners to five. The hosts also registered 15 total shots, one more than Bremen’s 14, while Bremen led 11-9 in shots inside the box.

The numbers showed a closely balanced contest rather than a clear winner. Bremen produced six shots off goal to Köln’s three, but Köln had six blocked shots compared with Bremen’s three. The goalkeepers also remained important: K. Hein made five saves for Bremen, while Köln’s goalkeeper made four.

Hein earns the highest rating

K. Hein was the standout performer, receiving an 8.4 rating after playing all 90 minutes and making five saves. Füllkrug followed on 8.2, while Skhiri and Maina both received 7.7 ratings. Skhiri’s display included one assist, three key passes and four tackles.

Late bookings, unchanged positions

Olivier Deman was booked for Bremen in the 72nd minute. Köln’s Gideon Mensah and Paul Okon-Engstler received yellow cards in the 86th and 90th minutes respectively. There were no red cards. The standings list Bremen 12th and Köln 14th, with both teams on three points from two games.
